Week 8B - Get Visual - Let a Picture Tell a Story

Taxco 925 Mexican Silver Store
Taxco 925 Mexican Silver Store has a little over 6500 followers on Facebook, 415 followers on Instagram, and only 30 followers on Twitter. On Facebook their only posts are about sharing their website’s blogs. The posts usually get a few likes and a couple of comments. Posts that talk about Mexican artists or give advice for choosing jewelry or gemstones get the most responses, up to 42 likes and 12 shares. They have abandoned the Twitter and the Instagram accounts for more than a year. In the past on Instagram they used hashtags like #mexicanjewelry, #handicraft, #mexicolindo, #mexicosilver, and #taxco. But they do not use hashtags very often.

Corazón
Corazón has 718 followers on Facebook, 1095 on Instagram. They are more active on Facebook than on Instagram. The Facebook posts usually get some likes, but not more than a couple of comments. And there are not too many posts which have comments. Followers are usually commenting on posts that ask them which jewelry they like the best from a picture. On Instagram they have much more likes, some of the posts have over a 100. They use a lot of hashtags like #sterlingsilverjewelry, #silver, #jewelry, #fashionaccessories, #style, #artisanmade, #handmade, #taxco, #taxcosilver, #925jewelry, #statementjewelry, #fashion, #jewelryofinstagram, #handmadejewerly, #uniquejewelry. They use more stylish pictures on Instagram than on Facebook. This and the many hashtags could be the reason why they have many more likes on Instagram.

Mexico Sterling
Mexico Sterling has about 3800 followers on Facebook, 217 on Twitter, and 1,140 subscribers on YouTube. On YouTube they only created 6 videos but they are following and posting many videos by others. They do not utilize their over 3,800 followers on Facebook. They hardly post, and even when they do, they do not get many likes. The posts almost never get any shares or comments. On their Twitter feed, I did not see a single like, comment, or share, which is especially surprising because they have 644 Tweets.

Silpada
On Facebook, Silpada has close to 350,000 followers, and on Instagram 24,700. Their most popular posts on Instagram received over a thousand likes. For example, when they announced that 50% of their sales for a particular item will go to a cancer survivor group, or when they had a special one-day offer. But even the less popular posts get a hundred or more likes. Some of the Instagram photos are also shared on Facebook, but Facebook also has a lot of additional content. On both sites they advertise their new products and seasonal sales very well, and they receive many likes through those posts. They are the first site that I saw using the poll feature on Facebook. One of their polls received over 400 votes. Of the companies I reviewed, this is the only one creating live videos on Facebook, and those videos have thousands and thousands of viewers. They also teamed up with another company to give away $500 coupons in a lottery. They posted this on both Instagram and Facebook. That postThey posted this on both Instagram and Facebook. That post on the Instagram received 242 likes and 25 comments on Instagram, and 53 likes, 11 comments, and 2 shares on Facebook. On Instagram they use hashtags like #jewelry, #jewels, #jewel, #gems, #gem, #gemstone, #jewelrydesigner, #stones, #accessories, #love, #sterlingsilver, #beautiful, #jotd, #style, #silpadajewelry, #accessory, #instajewelry.

To summarize my findings, I think there are many great ways to utilize social medial, but none of them are effective unless the sites are kept up to date. For this reason, I think that those companies who only have one or two sites that they keep updated are in a much better position than those with many sites that are neglected and out of date. I am planning to use Facebook and Instagram as my social media platforms. Tricks that I learned from checking out my competitors are the following.  Posting stylish pictures with a lot of good hashtags is my first task on Instagram. Creating valuable posts on Facebook, like giving ideas on how to match one’s jewelry with certain occasions or talking about issues that interest my followers. Making special announcements to introduce my new jewelry could generate activity on both sites. I also learned about the poll feature on Facebook, which I did not know about, but now I am excited to try it. Finally, supporting causes dear to my customers not only helps those causes but hopefully also generates more sales for me.
