Week 17 Wrapping It Up

First let me tell you how much I enjoyed this class. I have learned a lot about the different social media sites and the various advantages they offer. I also loved reading the textbook. Dave Kerpen not only writes about great ideas on how to use social media for business, but his writing style is also fantastic. It is a straightforward and enjoyable book to read. It is full of wonderful examples to help understand each chapter better. Every time I read a chapter I got excited and shared all my new knowledge with friends who already have running businesses. I am sure I will read this book over and over again while I create and run my own business.

Before this class, I only used Facebook and LinkedIn. But I did not use them often, and I never really looked at them as potential tools for my future business. I knew it was important for a business to be on social media, but I didn’t realize just how important – almost critical. In many ways, I don’t think my views on social media changed a lot. I think this class mainly strengthened my views. In the case of Facebook, I saw some of the advantages before, but I discovered many more useful tools they offer. I was not very familiar with Instagram. But now it is a platform I appreciate a lot, and I see how useful it can be for my business. Twitter is still not my favorite site. I see now that it can be the right tool for some, but not for me at this time.

The main thing I learned in this semester is how to stand out from the crowd in the social media world. I always knew that in today’s world it is essential to be on one or more platforms, but I didn’t see how crucial it is to not only have social media presence, but to find the right content and tone for your target market. I discovered how important it is to identify my target market right at the beginning. I learned how Facebook analytics can help me not only identify my target market, but also to get to know them and their habits, likes, and dislikes. I also learned how to listen and pay attention to what is really happening on my site. I think many businesses just keep posting the same type of posts all the time and do not realize that even if it was interesting for their followers in the beginning, it can become boring seeing the same thing all the time. Being relevant, interesting, and diverse is a basic requirement to be successful on social media. I feel confident that this class put good tools in my hands to be successful on the various social media platforms.

I am confident that I have found the right social media platforms for my business. I chose Facebook and Instagram to be the two sites I will use for my Mexican silver business. The various tools of Facebook will help me stay relevant to and interesting for my target market. At the risk of repeating from my previous post, Facebook gives me tools to post photos, videos, and stories. I can also create events, schedule podcasts, or go live. And with the data analytics tools, I can learn so much about my followers. For me, Facebook has it all. As for Instagram, its simplicity and clean look make that platform great.

As a summary for this blog post and this semester, I would like to repeat how much I gained from this class. I learned so many behind-the-scenes tricks and tips for several important social media platforms. I know that the social media world is constantly evolving. New platforms show up all the time, old ones become obsolete. Each platform comes up with new features, they change terms and conditions. But I think the knowledge I collected in this class will be a good base to build on in the future. I am confident that I can create social media sites that will be interesting for my followers and profitable assets for my company.
